Hello everybody!!

My name is Andres Villalpando, I am a graduate student in Organic Chemistry under Dr. Rendy Kartika, and I will be entering my 4th year in the Fall of 2014. I am from San Diego, CA but received my undergraduate degree from a small liberal arts college in Los Angeles, CA. I attended Whittier College where I majored in Chemistry and minored in Spanish while also being a member of the football and golf teams. I benefited from being in a smaller environment, I was able to work in a research lab early on in my undergraduate career. I worked for my advisor and former LSU alum, Dr. Ralph Isovitsch, as a sophomore in college and worked in his lab my entire undergraduate career. He is the main reason I am at LSU today. Moving to Baton Rouge in the middle of August was a huge SHOCK to say the least. Coming from a very dry and desert like climate to the over powering HUMIDITY was not an easy change!!

Here at LSU, under Dr. Kartika, my research focus is developing new synthetic methods towards the total synthesis of chlorosulfolipid natural products. Chlorosulfolipids contain numerous chlorine substituents along its hydrocarbon backbone and by developing a mild chlorination method we can access these compounds in just one step. Our efforts have produced two publications thus far and one is currently in preparation. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about chemistry, grad schools, the application process, or anything else. My office is located in 318 of the Chemistry and Materials Building, feel free to stop by with any questions and let me know what I can do to help!

Andres Villalpando
