Four Great Options to Gain Research Experience at LSU
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Research opportunities can be found on the LSU campus in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and Pennington Biomedical Research Center -- potentially any unit at LSU. During the summer of 2011, more than one third of our participants were outstanding sophomores. Summer stipends for this award are $4,000 per student. Participants are eligible to apply for support towards follow-on meetings, publication awards, and have preferred applicant status in future cycles of the HHMI Scientist and International competitions below.
HHMI Scientist
Advanced undergraduates with extensive research experience will be considered for summer research opportunities in the laboratories of an HHMI Investigator/Professor/Scientist, a group of world-renown scientists that includes 13 Nobel laureates and 147 members of the National Academy of Sciences. Visit HHMI.org for more information about these scientists. Summer stipend for this award is $5,000.
International Research
Advanced undergraduates with a strong research background (excluding pre-med majors) and students beginning graduate school in Fall 2012 may also be considered for international research opportunities. Possible placements include laboratories in Pasteur-Lille, Leuven, Grenoble, Brazil, and Thailand. Financial support of up to $10,000 for this award includes a summer stipend, international travel expenses, and travel within the US to the relevant embassy. Funding also supports a visit from your Spelman mentor.
Women in Science
Designed for women who may be considering a faculty career and who will enter a graduate program of their choice in Fall 2012, this opportunity allows graduating seniors to spend the summer in a lab at one of our partnering liberal arts institutions such as Furman University or Occidental College. In addition to working closely with a faculty member, participants will also mentor undergraduate students. Applicants are considered on an individual basis with strong recommendations from the faculty of their undergraduate schools.

Applications will be accepted until February 10, 2011.
